Comfrey & Figs

March 11, 2017March 11, 2017 TC3 Comments

Comfrey is an amazing plant, as medicine, as food, as companion plant, in compost, and in plenty of other ways. Comfrey is not uncommonly grown under fruit trees where its deep roots draw resources from below to the surface where fruit trees can access them. Comfrey juice, basically (by way of its key chemical allantoin),… Continue reading Comfrey & Figs

Held Over Figs

March 9, 2017May 23, 2017 TC1 Comment

Has not happened often here, but occasionally figs will begin to form in the fall and, with no time to ripen, hold over on the tree through winter if placed in frost-protected storage. Three weeks ago, in mid-February, the Cyprus fig tree below looked exactly as it did last fall, holding several young figs in… Continue reading Held Over Figs

Figs in Snow

February 9, 2017 TCLeave a comment

Photos below show the scene here this snowy day. Most of the fig wood photoed may be alive yet. If so, this could be the first winter in 5 years that exposed fig wood survives. Supposed to hit 15 Fahrenheit tonight, all but there now. Temps down to 8 Fahrenheit or lower came through a… Continue reading Figs in Snow

Yellow Red Fig – Brooklyn White

February 1, 2017March 3, 2017 TCLeave a comment

Figs with yellow skin and red pulp seem to be more common in hotter regions, such as the southern US, and where climates are warm enough for fig wasps to exist and pollinate figs, such as in southern California and the Mediterranean region. Brooklyn White is an exceptional fig variety in ripening with yellow skin and… Continue reading Yellow Red Fig – Brooklyn White

The Colors of 26 Light Skin Figs

January 23, 2017March 8, 2017 TCLeave a comment

While dark figs may ripen as myriad shades of a variety of colors (blue, brown, purple, black, red), light figs have green or yellow shaded skin when ripe. Two dozen-plus light figs: Fig pulp color and flavor do not necessarily correspond to skin color, though these often correspond more closely with light skin figs than with dark… Continue reading The Colors of 26 Light Skin Figs
