











Early May, 2024. At this point, this year, in northcentral WV, haskap fruit are ripe, along with the very earliest goumi fruits that the robins have begun to pluck from the bushes, mostly ignoring the haskap. As for (arguably, I suppose) the two premier native fruits of the Appalachian region and the continent, pawpaw and persimmon, pawpaw is finishing bloom and setting and swelling fruitlets, while persimmon is still in the early blooming stage (both the American and the Asian species). Nanking bush cherry is just beginning to swell and blush red but is significantly behind goumi fruit, which itself is well behind haskap and honeyberry, the later and earlier types of edible blue honeysuckle, found in wild form circumpolar typically north of southern Canadian latitudes. Juneberry fruit seems next up, followed by tart cherry. Ribes fruit in this zone and region would be well advanced too. Elderberry blooms are widely set though not yet open. Overall an amazing month and a half transformation from March: from dormancy to leaf, bloom, and fruit. The continent-native beach plum fruit has recently set, apparently the latest blooming, latest ripening, most frost-proof plum – prunus maritima – and looking to be the most productive, will see. Blackberries are in blossom. Some brambles have set fruit. Seems persimmon and elderberry will be the last to set fruit.
